The West Virginia State Lottery sold its first ticket on January 9, 1986—over 1.5 million tickets were sold that day. The lottery continues to be popular today. West Virginia also operates a video lottery system.
To date, more than $9 billion from lottery ticket sales has gone toward public education, senior services, and state tourism.
